PURPOSE:

The Sunstar Foundation has established the World Dental Hygienist Awards to recognize dental hygienists who have made significant contributions to dental hygiene science or to patients, the community and the general public.

THE AWARDS:

 

The World Dental Hygienist Awards are presented at every ISDH to a person or group chosen by an independent Selection Committee. Entries will be accepted for the 2019 awards from January 2017 through 14th January 2019. All entries must be self-submitted; applications from third parties will not be accepted. All eligible entries that meet the criteria and are submitted by the due date will be blinded before going to the Selection Committee for review and judging.



 

Award categories and Selection Criteria:

  1. Research Category - The entry may include both quantitative and qualitative analyses that provide important new insights that contribute to the body of knowledge in dental hygiene. The winning entry in this category is chosen by the Selection Committee from unpublished, original research papers.

  2. Activity/Project Category - The entry should provide details of the activities that have made a key contribution to patients, the community or to the general public. The positive impact of the activities on the health of a significant number of individuals should be empirically demonstrated. This Award is open to individuals as well as groups of dental hygienists who have made notable accomplishments in any area of oral health promotion, including counseling, education, innovation, prevention and treatment. Measurable outcomes that demonstrate improved health must be provided.

  3. Student Research Category - The entry may include both quantitative and qualitative analyses that provide important new insights that contribute to the body of knowledge in dental hygiene. The winning entry in this category is chosen by the Selection Committee from unpublished, original research papers.

  4. Student Activity/Project Category - The entry should provide details of the activities that have made a key contribution to patients, the community or to the general public. The positive impact of the activities on the health of a significant number of individuals should be empirically demonstrated. This Award is open to individuals as well as groups of student dental hygienists who have made notable accomplishments in any area of oral health promotion, including counseling, education, innovation, prevention and treatment. Measurable outcomes that demonstrate improved health must be provided. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to grant an award in all categories if submissions do not meet the criteria listed above.

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that students seek a faculty mentor to support them in their research or activity/project and review their paper prior to submission to ensure it meets the award criteria.

 

AWARDS DESCRIPTION:

Cash awards will be issued to the winner and a donation in the winner’s name will be issued to a project and/or dental hygiene program designated by the winner for the purpose of supporting additional research and study. A trophy will be presented for each category at the International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH). The Sunstar Foundation will pay for participation for one representative of each winning category for all aspects of the ISDH including full registration. The Sunstar Foundation will determine a travel allowance to be paid. The award winner is responsible for making all travel arrangements.

The award prize money will be distributed as follows:

Research Category - $5000

  • $3000 issued to the winner
  • $2000 donation made in the winner's name to a dental hygiene program chosen by the winner.

NOTE: dental hygiene program should be declared in the application form.

Activity/Project Category - $3000

  • $2000 issued to the winner
  • $1000 donation made in the winner's name to a community project chosen by the winner. 

NOTE: community project should be declared in the application form.

Student Research Category - $2000

  • $1500 issued to the winner
  • $500 donation made in the winner's name to a dental hygiene program chosen by the winner. 

NOTE: dental hygiene program should be declared in the application form.

Student Activity/Project Category - $2000

  • $1500 issued to the winner
  • $500 donation made in the winner's name to a community project chosen by the winner.

NOTE: community project should be declared in the application form.

The award ceremony will take place as part of the International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (Seoul, Korea July 4-7, 2019). Attendance at the ceremony is mandatory for one representative of each category winner. One representative for each winning category agrees to present her/his paper at the ISDH. The winning representative agrees to meet with Sunstar personnel (when requested) at the ISDH to rehearse and review each program prior to presentation. Sunstar reserves the right to remove any content that promotes products or is commercial in nature.

CONDITIONS FOR ELIGIBILITY:

• For Research and Activity/Project Categories: Entrants must be licensed dental hygienists
• For Student Categories: Entrants must be associate, bachelor, or master level dental hygiene students

 

NOTE: Are not eligible for awards: Entrants working for a commercial company, past award recipients, papers/projects with a committee member involved or in the list of authors; entries promoting the sales of specific commercial products; faculty members submitting for awards in the student category unless identified as mentors/supervisors only.


REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMISSION:

Every entry must be accompanied by:
• the author’s curriculum vitae (and the one of his/her team)
• a copy of dental hygienists licenses or certificates/Students registration certificates from applicant’s schools

Each submission must be completed in all part. Each submission must state that the entrant(s) have studied and understand the entry and eligibility criteria and that his/her/their submission conforms fully to them.
Manuscripts may be submitted as an individual or as a group. The submission must clearly state whether it is an individual or group entry. If a group entry, the person submitting the entry on behalf of the group must be clearly identified. All submissions must be written in English. It must be clearly stated that the paper or report has not been previously published.
Submitted papers are limited to 4000 words, excluding tables and references. Submitted papers must contain: an abstract, statement of purpose, results, discussion and conclusions. By applying, applicants agree to accept the stated guidelines. Please submit manuscripts HERE BEFORE the deadline (00 / 12 am CET time, Monday  14th January 2019) following the online process.


SELECTION:

An independent Selection Committee of internationally known dental hygienists and researchers will review all entries (for both Licensed dental Hygienist and Students) and choose the winners in each of the following categories:

Research Category:

• Relevance and importance of the research to the Dental Hygiene profession
• Whether the methodology/approach appropriately addresses the stated objective(s)
• Originality of the research and the applicant’s knowledge of existing literature
• Technical writing skills of the applicant
• Data collection and analysis


Activity/Project Category:

• Relevance and importance of the Activity/Project to the Dental Hygiene profession
• Whether the Activity/Project will make key contributions to patients, the community or the general public
• Originality of the Activity/Project
• The Activity/Project's ability to improve oral health
• The Activity/Project's ability to be scaled-up and replicated by others
• Technical writing skills of the applicant


The Sunstar Foundation is the award sponsor but does not participate in award screening or selection. This is the sole responsibility of the Independent Selection Committee. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, members of the Selection Committee must disclose any personal or professional ties with entrants (e.g., as instructor, supervisor, dissertation committee member, or editor) to the other members of the Committee. If a Committee member does have such ties, she or he should not participate in judging that particular category. Selection Committee members are not eligible for an award in any category. Faculty members mentoring students for the student categories may not include their names in the award application.

Selections are based solely on the criteria noted above. Personal information, such as gender, age, nationality, race, and religion shall not affect the selection process.


ANNOUCEMENT OF WINNERS:

The ‘’Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Award’’ winners will be announced on Monday 15th April 2019. Winners will be announced in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene and on its website, on the IFDH website, as well as on the websites of the Sunstar Foundation and Sunstar companies. Sunstar reserves the right to publish the results in other dental hygiene journals world wide. Winners’ photos and other information may be used for promotional purposes.
